Tokyo 2020, volleyball the calendar of the men’s and women’s national team

The hunt for the Gold Medal is on. Men to close a circle that began about 30 years ago, women to open a new cycle. Winning and lasting. The Italy of volleyball lands in Tokyo with various certainties, some physiological doubts and the awareness that, however it goes, one will have lived a dream. Especially in a delicate period like this.

Blengini’s youngsters, included in group A, in the first phase they will see it against Canada, Poland, Japan, Iran and Venezuela. The first 4 go to the quarter-finals (3 August) and intersect with those of group B (Argentina, Brazil, France, Russian Olympic Committee, United States and Tunisia). Debut against Canada, Saturday at 2 am Italian time with Rai live broadcast.

Mazzanti’s girls, on the other hand, drawn in group B, immediately they will find rather tough opponents: Argentina, China, the Russian Olympic Committee, the United States and Turkey. It is a nice mix between youngsters and veterans led on the bench by Chicco Blengini and led on the parquet by Ivan Zaytsev. The Tsar, as well as the whole group, dreams of the heavy medal after the bronze in London 2012 and the silver in Rio in 2016. Together with him, his second Luca Vettori, the talented titular setter Simone Giannelli, the very expert pair of central Matteo Piano-Simone Anzani and the free Massimo Colaci, veteran of a thousand battles. In the band the owners should be the stainless Osmany Juantorena and the emerging Daniele Lavia. Attention, however, to the possible surprise: Alessandro Michieletto, 19 years old who already has in his curriculum a Super League championship as a starter and a Champions League final with Trento.

Here the situation becomes particularly interesting. Davide Mazzanti’s team, in fact, is one of the super favorites to get on the top step of the Japanese podium. The Azzurre are a well-matched team, with a couple of heavy and very young individualities. So young, as we said, to be able to aspire to open a cycle in pink volleyball.
Everything revolves around the star Paola Egonu: CIO standard bearer at the opening ceremony e considered by many to be the strongest player in the world. It will be up to her, together with captain Miriam Sylla, to guide the companions towards the conquest of a historic medal, the first in Italian history. To complete the forwards department: Caterina Bosetti, the young Elena Pietrini and Indre Sorokaite.
On the other hand, Ofelia Malinov will direct the titular sextet with Alessia Orro ready to give her minutes and breath while in the center alternating, above all, Cristina Chirichella, Raphaela Folie and Sarah Fahr.
Finally, Monica De Gennaro in the always ungrateful role of free.
