SG Flensburg-Handewitt wins first handball Champions League victory

On the sixth matchday, the team of coach Maik Machulla defeated HC Motor Zaporozhye with 34:27 (13:11). After the home win against the Ukrainian champions, the SG increased their points account to three points. Flensburg remains eighth and last in Group B because Dinamo Bucharest surprisingly defeated KC Veszprém (31:29). Sixth place is required to reach the playoff round.

Hampus Wanne was Flensburg’s best shooter with eight goals. For the Ukrainians, Wiatschaslau Bochan was successful seven times. The interest in the home game on Thursday evening was probably not particularly great because of the late kick-off time. The 4,200 available places in “Hell Nord” were not even half occupied.

All-clear for Mensah Larsen

The question mark behind another wobbly candidate could be deleted by the weakened replacement Flensburg before the throw-off. Mads Mensah Larsen, who was sick on Wednesday with gastrointestinal problems, was part of the start seven.

Möller and Wanne as assets

After a confused beginning, it took the SG a good quarter of an hour to get rolling. Although the Flensburg team eliminated the supposedly most dangerous player in the back of the guests in Aidenas Malasinskas, there was no move to the goal in the attack. Machulla acknowledged this with a shake of her head and with clear words in the first break (12/4:6). It was only when left wing Wanne scored three goals in a row and goalkeeper Kevin Möller kept the store closed for three minutes that Flensburg pulled away to 10: 7 (19th), but then failed to extend the lead even further until the break. With a 13:11 it went into the cabins.

New entry Einarsson is getting stronger and stronger

In the second half the home side started much more concentrated than in the first half and benefited from the largely sedate style of play of the Ukrainians. So it wasn’t too difficult for the SG to continuously expand their lead. Wanne scored reliably, especially from the seven-meter point. And Teitur Orn Einarsson, who recently signed on from Kristianstad, is increasingly proving to be a stroke of luck. The left-hander from Iceland scored seven goals in his third game in the Flensburg jersey. Shortly before the end, he also felt the accumulated frustration of Denis Vasilev. For the Ukrainian, after his gross foul in the 59th minute, the game ended a little earlier than for his colleagues. He saw a smooth red for the action.

On Sunday, the Machulla team will initially continue in the Bundesliga with table neighbors Frisch Auf Göppingen.
