Football, national team: Flick appoints Nmecha and Brandt to the DFB squad

Julian Brandt from Borussia Dortmund and Julian Draxler from Paris St.-Germain are returning after a long time, as the German Football Association (DFB) announced on Friday (05.11.2021). There are a total of four goalkeepers and 23 field players in the squad.

Nmecha with two goals in the Champions League

The 22-year-old Nmecha became European champion with the German U21 in 2021. Before the season he moved from English champions Manchester City, who had loaned him to RSC Anderlecht, to VfL Wolfsburg. He has scored three goals in nine Bundesliga appearances so far. He scored two more goals for Lower Saxony in his four appearances in the Champions League.

“He’s very active and can hold the ball well. Physically he’s not Horst Hrubesch. He’s a different, playful way.”said Flick in one of the dated DFB common statement about Nmecha.

Brandt benefits from Rose

Julian Brandt was most recently part of the squad that conceded a 6-0 draw in Spain in the Nations League in November 2020. In doing so, however, he was not used. He has scored three goals in 35 international matches since 2016.

Brandt went through difficult times at his club in Dortmund, often just sitting on the bench under coach Lucien Favre. Under Marco Rose the shape increased significantly. Brandt is now a regular.

Günter was appointed by Flick for the first time

Julian Draxler became world champion with Germany in 2014, but has now paused longer than Brandt in the national team. He was last used in October 2020 in a 3: 3 in Cologne against Switzerland. The former Schalke player has scored seven goals in 56 international matches so far.

“We are convinced that they are of good quality and that they can advance a team in terms of football. They can attract attention”, so Flick about Brandt and Draxler.

Christian Günter from SC Freiburg is also back. The left-back was part of the squad for the European Championship in summer 2021, but had not yet been appointed by Flick. Goalkeeper Kevin Trapp from Eintracht Frankfurt is also back, he was missing from the squad for the international matches in October.

Hummels not there

Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund, who repeatedly struggles with knee problems, was not taken into account. Ilkay Gündogan from Manchester City made his comeback after an injury break.

Games against Liechtenstein and in Armenia

The German team has already qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In the two remaining games, she will face Liechtenstein on Thursday (11.11.2021) in Wolfsburg. Three days later, she concluded the qualification and the international season with the game against Armenia in Yerevan.
