Corona in Germany: 42,770 new infections – incidence is increasing slightly

As of: 12/30/2021 7:12 a.m.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, the nationwide seven-day incidence is currently 207.4. The figures may be incomplete due to little testing and reporting activity. This is precisely why the Association of Cities calls for more test and laboratory capacities.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has published a slightly higher nationwide seven-day incidence than the day before – but with the restriction that the data can provide an incomplete picture due to the low test and reporting activity during the holidays. The RKI gave the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week as 207.4. The day before the nationwide value was 205.5, a week ago it was 280.3 (previous month: 439.2).

Hospitalization incidence drops slightly

The health authorities reported 42,770 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. Exactly one week ago there were 44,927 infections. According to the new information, 383 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 425 deaths. The number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 111,602.

The RKI has counted 7,109,182 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not recognized. The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered on Thursday at 6,332,300.

The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was given by the RKI for yesterday at 3.18 (Tuesday 3.25).

Yesterday, Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach declared that the actual corona incidence was probably two to three times as high as officially recorded. The background to this is that in view of vacations and public holidays, fewer tests are being carried out at work and in doctor’s offices. In addition, fewer corona test results would be forwarded because there is a lack of staff in the health authorities. According to Lauterbach, there is a significant increase in infections with the highly contagious virus variant Omikron.

City Association calls for more corona tests

In view of the unclear data situation, the German Association of Cities called on the federal and state governments to allow more tests and laboratory capacities. “In order to further improve the reporting situation and reliable data delivery, the federal and state governments should ensure that the private practices also ensure that the necessary PCR tests are carried out on public holidays such as Christmas and New Year and that sufficient laboratory capacities are available on these days,” said General Manager Helmut Dedy to the editorial network Germany. The chain of reports from the federal states to the Robert Koch Institute must also go well on these days.

Dedy said the health authorities are currently not the bottleneck in the reporting chain when it comes to reporting the number of positive corona tests to the RKI. The city offices also worked between Christmas and New Year, arranging tests and reporting the test results, Dedy assured. But because many medical practices and laboratories are currently on Christmas vacation, there is currently less testing. In addition, it takes more time in the laboratories to clearly identify the omicron variant in positive samples by means of sequencing.
