Corona at RB Leipzig: three players in quarantine – three findings are still unclear

RB Leipzig is not spared from Corona at the start of training after the winter break. As the Bundesliga club announced on Monday, the offensive players Andre Silva and Christopher Nkunku are in quarantine in their home country. They tested positive during their Christmas vacation in Portugal and France, respectively. Both should return to Leipzig in the course of the week, whether they will play against FSV Mainz 05 (Saturday, 3:30 p.m. in the ticker in the SpiO app) is still unclear.

RB also announced that the virus was detected during testing last Sunday at young professional Solomon Bonnah. There were unclear findings with Nordi Mukiele, Benjamin Henrichs and Dani Olmo.

Trio back on the pitch

On the other hand, RB started with Lukas Klostermann, Yussuf Poulsen and youngster Sidney Raebiger (16) on Monday (3.1.2022) the training units in preparation for the start of the second half of the season. Before the winter break, the three had taken a longer break due to torn muscle fibers or an irritation of the tendons. The return of Austria’s international Konrad Laimer to team training is expected according to information from RB on Sunday in the coming week. Laimer had torn an inner ligament in his left knee.

Olmo should be built up slowly

The Leipzigers exercise caution with the Spaniard Dani Olmo, who, after grueling European and Olympic participation, is only slowly being built up for fear of further setbacks. In the preliminary round, after two torn muscles in his thigh, he only played six competitive games for RB. That is why he only offers individual training at the moment. Left-back Marcel Halstenberg, who has not played a single game this season after ankle problems and a knee operation, is hoping to start team training in mid-January. His last game was the European Championship match with Germany against Portugal (4-1).

Corona tests instead of performance tests

Seven training units are planned at RB Leipzig before the start of the second half of the season. The new coach Domenico Tedesco has ordered that the players should be there two hours before training. His coaching team must know 1:45 hours in advance which actors can be worked with.

Start on Monday morning

Tedesco, who asks for units on the lawn on Monday from 10:30 a.m. and also in the afternoon, has a lot to do to bring his game idea closer to the kickers so that they can implement it constantly. Because if there was a constant in RB’s worst first half of the season since promotion, it was inconstancy. That has to change in order to achieve the desired goal of also participating in the Champions League in the coming season. In addition, the Leipziger are still represented in the Europa League (against Real Sociedad San Sebastian) and in the DFB-Pokal (against second division promoted FC Hansa Rostock).

Brobbey back to Ajax Amsterdam

The people of Leipzig had already on New Year’s Eve the loan of the Dutch U21 international Brian Brobbey to Ajax Amsterdam made official after long speculation about it. The 19-year-old moved from Ajax to Saxony on a free transfer in the summer, but was unable to assert himself there. The striker made just one start in the Bundesliga and one in the Champions League.

Luan Candido no longer belongs to RB Leipzig. The 20-year-old, who moved from Palmeiras São Paulo to Saxony in the summer of 2019 but was not part of the professional team, was last loaned to Red Bull Bragantino in Brazil. The RB sister club has now firmly committed Candido.

The 18-year-old US midfield talent Caden Clark is not yet in Leipzig, but will be awarded again for half a year to the Red Bulls New York.

Without Forsberg, Haidara and Moriba

In February at the earliest Sweden’s “Footballer of the Year” Emil Forsberg expected back. The playmaker, who had followed none other than superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the election, sustained a thigh injury in the last group game against Bielefeld. His potential representative Amadou Haidara is at the Africa Cup with Mali as well as Ilaix Moriba (18), who has come from FC Barcelona and is there for Guinea
