Faced with the rebound of the Covid-19 and a restless presidential pre-campaign, Emmanuel Macron descends into the electoral arena

Emmanuel Macron has therefore once again donned the costume of a warlord. That of a President of the Republic determined not to stay with a weapon in the face of the announced arrival of a fifth wave of Covid-19, likely to wipe out the efforts made after more than a year and a half of pandemic . But also that of a head of state already launched – although unofficially – in the battle of the presidential campaign, where he could play, on April 10 and 24, 2022, his re-election.

During his speech of about thirty minutes, broadcast Tuesday, November 9 at 8 p.m. on TF1 and LCI, Emmanuel Macron confessed it at the outset. Its goal is “To answer questions, sometimes concerns, which are yours on our health, economic, social and geopolitical situation”. In other words, the subject of the resumption of the Covid-19 epidemic which is hitting France, like its German and British neighbors, although worrying, was not the main issue of this speech.

Admittedly, the Head of State called on the French to their duty to ” responsibility “ and of “Solidarity”, signaling that “We are not done with the pandemic”. “The 40% increase in our incidence rate in one week and the increase in hospitalizations are warning signs”, he explained, noting that the relaxation of constraints (barrier gestures, wearing a mask at school, etc.) was no longer relevant.

Educational and authoritarian at the same time

He had to renew with a tone that was both educational and authoritarian, urging the 6 million French people not yet vaccinated to do so, emphasizing the dangerousness and the consequences of the disease. The President of the Republic also had to brandish the threat of a sanction to force the over 65s to perform a booster dose. Six months after the last injection of the vaccine, the immunity of this age group as well as that of people with co-morbidities decreases sharply. And despite a campaign to encourage this vaccine booster, only half of eligible people have now taken action.

As of December 15, the health pass for over 65s will no longer be valid without this booster dose, warned the Head of State. An injunction which, like that of July 12, announcing the establishment of the health pass, was enough to trigger a hundred thousand vaccination appointments on Doctolib.

But if the Covid-19 still lurks, the possession of the vaccine in sufficient quantity and the promise of access, by the beginning of next year, to an effective treatment against the serious forms of the disease make it possible to consider the future with a certain serenity. “We are facing a hedge whose height we do not know at this stage, but we have a conviction, we will be able to cross it together”, government spokesman Gabriel Attal said on November 5.
