These are the goodies Apple will (probably) unveil tonight

Apple will hold a digital event on Tuesday evening that will largely be devoted to the new iPhone 13 series. Insiders also expect the announcement of the Apple Watch Series 7 and perhaps new AirPods.

It’s a tradition at Apple to unveil a new iPhone every September. Last year was an exception to that rule: due to the corona pandemic, the devices were somewhat delayed, so that Apple could only keep them above the baptismal font on October 13.

Four models

In terms of line-up, the iPhone 13 is expected to differ little from its predecessor. Again, it seems that four models will be launched: the standard iPhone 13 with a screen diagonal of 6.1 inches, an iPhone 13 mini of 5.4 inches, a 6.1-inch Pro model and finally a larger iPhone 13 Pro Max with a 6.7-inch display.

Major design differences are not expected, but website MacRumors does take into account some striking new colors, including pink and bronze. Because especially the Pro versions (with three lenses instead of two) get improved optics, these devices could also be slightly ‘thicker’ than their predecessors – especially due to a slightly more protruding camera island. This would include larger sensors and more light-sensitive lenses, for better recordings in dark conditions.

Other rumors speak of a higher refresh rate of 120Hz on the Pro screens, more powerful batteries across the board, and faster wireless charging at 25W. The iPhone 13 could also become Apple’s first smartphone with 1 terabyte of (fixed) storage memory – in the most expensive version, admittedly. The top model from the 12 series has 512 gigabytes.

New smartwatch

Few really new gadgets are expected with the seventh generation of the Apple Watch, but the design would be completely overhauled this time. To such an extent that the manufacturer would have (or has had) to deal with production problems. Since the introduction of the smart clock, exactly seven years ago, its design has hardly changed.

According to MacRumors, the displays of the ‘large and small’ Apple Watch will be one millimeter larger, which amounts to 45mm and 41mm. At the same time, the manufacturer would have managed to narrow the bezels (screen edges) somewhat. And because the new S7 chip would take up less space, there may be more room for a larger battery that can provide more autonomy.

If there is ‘one more thing’ on Tuesday evening, the gimmick with which the late Steve Jobs liked to close his keynotes, it could well be the third generation of the Apple AirPods. Apart from the fact that they are in the pipeline, little is known about them. Insiders expect a design that is more in line with the AirPods Pro earphones and – again – an improved autonomy.

Operating systems

Finally, at the Apple event, a lot of attention will be paid to the latest software versions for the gadgets of the fruit brand. In addition to iOS 15 for the iPhone, this mainly concerns iPadOS 15, watchOS 8 and tvOS 15 for the Apple TV set-top box. These operating systems have been available in a test version for a while, so apart from the final release dates, we expect few innovations in this area.
