Review OnePlus Buds Z2: affordable wireless earphones with ANC

OnePlus regularly launches new products, nowadays not only smartphones, but also wireless earbuds. In recent weeks I have extensively tested the OnePlus Buds Z2 and you can read the results in this review.

OnePlus Buds Z2

The OnePlus Buds Z2 are relatively affordable and are therefore positioned below the OnePlus Buds Pro, which I reviewed earlier. Still, they offer some interesting features at this price, including Active Noise Canceling (ANC).

The OnePlus Buds Z2 cost less than 100 euros, but what do you get for this price? Can they compete with, for example, the Nothing Ear (1), coincidentally made by Carl Pei, the founder of OnePlus.

In recent weeks I have used the OnePlus Buds Z2 extensively and I share my experiences in this review.

The OnePlus Buds 2 are affordable, but good wireless earbuds. Especially the addition of ANC is a big step forward. This offers a lot of value for a relatively low purchase price. The sound is quite full, the low tones even just a bit too much, but that is of course a personal preference. Unfortunately, there is no equalizer available to adjust this. Still, I would recommend the OnePlus Buds Z2 Pro: just good and also affordable!

Pros

Affordable

Active Noise Cancelling (ANC)

Fast and stable connection

Nice fit

Negatives

Particularly fingerprint-sensitive

Sometimes a bit (too) much emphasis on low tones and not the possibility to adjust this due to lack of equalizer

Looks and fit

The OnePlus Buds Z2 are very similar to their predecessor, but that’s not a bad thing. They look like practical earplugs. Personally I like this fit better, but how wireless earphones sitting, of course, depends on the shape of your ear.

What is striking is that the black case is particularly sensitive to fingerprints, inherent to the material. You see them appearing regularly and I notice that I regularly rubbed the box against my sweater to remove it. Not a clincher, but certainly a point of attention.

As mentioned above, I prefer earphones with this form factor and they stay in place with me. Here you can choose from three differences eartips that are supplied. For me the smallest sufficed, as is the case with most earplugs.

The OnePlus Buds Z don’t excel in design, but is that necessary? I do not think so. Earplugs, especially in this price range, simply have to work well. If you are looking for more unique earplugs, the Nothing Ear (1) may be a good option, with the transparent looks.

Daily use OnePlus Buds Z2

Connecting the OnePlus Buds Z2 is nice and fast: a matter of taking the earbuds out of the box, putting them in your ears and the connection is practically instant. Connecting for the first time also went very smoothly: within less than 10 seconds everything was arranged.

In terms of connections, there is nothing to criticize about these earbuds, but what about the sound quality. For the price range in which the OnePlus Buds Z2 fall, they certainly don’t do their job wrong. The sound is quite full, with the low tones sometimes being a bit too much.

Unfortunately, there is no equalizer available to adjust the sound experience to your own taste. So if you like a good bass, then this is definitely a good choice. Personally, I would prefer to hear it just a little less, so that there is more room for the rest, but unfortunately that is not an option.

OnePlus Buds Z2

We also find ANC (Active Noise Cancelling) on the OnePlus Buds Z2. This means that sounds are filtered out, so that you get much less of your environment. Again, I was quite surprised by these Bluetooth earbuds, the ANC does not disappoint.

Whether in a busy(er) open-plan office, or on the road, the Z2 does its job very well in most circumstances.

A number of modes are available to control the ANC:

  • Maximum noise reduction
  • noise reduction
  • Noise cancellation off
  • Transparantiemodus

It can be operated with the HeyMelody app (Android in iOS), or by tapping the earbuds. You can set the ‘type’ of tap this is in the app. By default, you can switch between ANC and transparency by holding the touch part for 1 second.

In the transparent mode, the sounds from outside are amplified somewhat, so that you get more of the environment. Handy if, for example, you want to take something with you or have a conversation (if you want to with your earplugs in).

The touch control is activated by pressing or tapping the round surface of the earphones. Depending on the settings of the HeyMelody app, an action is then performed. I do notice a slight delay here. Pausing or starting the music then takes a fraction of a second.

Compared to the competitors, HeyMelody app is not very extensive. There are some options to see the remaining battery life, set how the touch controls work and an option to adjust the amount of noise reduction.

Supplemented with a fit test, there are no further options in the app. As stated before, no equalizer unfortunately. Too bad, OnePlus can still gain ground here.

This does not alter the fact that for less than € 100 you get very pleasant, good-sounding earplugs that you absolutely can’t go wrong with.
