Our colleagues from InsideEVs shared measurements of fast charging of the Lucid Air Dream Edition R – the electric car with the largest, for today, the power reserve on one charge. Previously, they tested several other models in a similar way, including the Tesla Model S Plaid – here are their results:

1 According to the authors of the test, the difference between the nominal capacity (118 kWh) and the 100% charge level (134 kWh) is explained by the energy consumption for cooling the battery. According to InsideEVs, NSThis is a fairly high value compared to typical losses when charging electric vehicles (13.5% vs 10%), although according to their data, when charging a Porsche Taycan DC, 12% is lost.

Please note that as the Lucid Air Dream Edition Range is charged, the charging power decreases, while its peak value remains at 304 kW for several minutes. A similar situation is with the Tesla Supercharger v3 – when the Model S Plaid is connected, the power is 147 kW, at about the 5th minute it increases to the maximum value, 250 kW, and gradually decreases from about the 34th minute. Similarly, for Mustang Mach-E (99 kW, 88 kW available) – power is reduced from 145 kW to zero after 2.5 hours:

Obviously, the higher power of the Lucid Motors charging station compared to Tesla (304 kW vs 250 kW, at peak values) and the higher charging speed of the Air Dream Edition Range is explained – in just 5.5 minutes the electric car is charged up to a range of 167 km.

Noteworthy is the discrepancy between the nominal (according to the EPA standard) and the actual power reserve measured by InsideEVs – the latter is 13-14% less. For comparison, according to measurements of the YouTube channel carwow, a similar difference for the Tesla Model 3 was 22%.

Thus, the Lucid Air Dream Edition Range can be charged up to 150 km in 5 minutes – which is a little longer than refueling at a gas station. The rest of the models have a worse charging speed, but for a stop at a roadside cafe it is quite acceptable.

Mainly, the convenience of using an electric vehicle rests on infrastructure. And although in some countries (including Russia) things are not going well in this regard, the number of charging stations around the world is steadily growing. For example, the number of Tesla Supercharger charging stations recently exceeded 30 thousand, and the company plans to triple them in the next two years. Another American automaker, General Motors, has announced plans to install 40,000 11.5 kW (240 V x 48 A) slow chargers in the US and Canada. Interestingly, not only manufacturers of electric vehicles are investing in the development of the infrastructure of charging stations, but also, surprisingly, Shell. The company plans to deploy half a million hotspots by 2025, according to the COO of Greenlots, which the oil giant acquired a couple of years ago.
